Engineer I – Guidance, Navigation & Control (GN&C) Verification and Validation
This position is for a GN&C engineer who can work in a team to perform spacecraft verification and validation activities. This position will report to the program lead and to the manager of the Systems Engineering department. The responsibilities include supporting development of high fidelity spacecraft simulations, and writing and executing test procedures on simulators and a spacecraft.
What You’ll Do:
Support Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) Engineering, Simulation and Test activities throughout the lifecycle of a program.
Support development and evaluate real-time simulations of Ball Aerospace space vehicles.
Participate in full software life cycle functions including software requirements, architecture, design, code, test, integration and documentation.
Verify and validate requirements for: attitude knowledge and pointing, agility, line-of-sight stability, orbit position knowledge, delta-v accuracy, payload sun avoidance and fault scenarios.
Learn GN&C components’ functions, interfaces, and the GN&C concept of operations for the space vehicle.
Support closed-loop GN&C simulation on a spacecraft.
Use test and measurement equipment to test and troubleshoot spaceflight hardware.
Write, review, update, and execute test procedures and scripts.
Clearly and thoroughly document the GN&C approach in Systems Engineering Reports, including detailed description of technical designs and applicable Ball philosophy.
Prepare and give presentations to peers, management and customers.
Work in a fast-paced team environment assisting to integrate and test spacecraft hardware.
Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
Perform other duties as necessary.
What You’ll Need:
BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience
Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
Experience in Guidance, Navigation, Control (GNC), Attitude Determination & Control Subsystem (ADCS), Dynamics & Control Systems, or related space vehicle systems is desired.
Experience developing model-based simulations using Matlab/Simulink, preference for those with experience with auto code generation using Embedded Coder, Simulink Coder and/or Matlab Coder.
Experience in designing, developing, and testing software for operational systems using programming languages such as C/C++, and Ruby/Python.
Experience writing, reviewing, and executing test procedures.
Flexibility to respond to differing technical opinions, evolving customer needs, challenging budgets and schedules, and limited resources.
Effectiveness in small team work environment with broad responsibilities.

Superb writing and presentation skills.
Ability to be goal oriented with excellent organizational skills, a team mindset, and capable of coming up to speed quickly on assigned programs.
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment.
May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
May access other facilities in various weather conditions.
Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
A current DoD clearance and/or SCI access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position, however applicant must be willing and eligible for submission within 60-90 days after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.
