Annual Salary Range: $73,900 - $133,100

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. Job Description

The Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is inviting applications for a research position to work on government and industry sponsored research in the area of dynamic and transient modeling, optimized controls development, optimized sizing, testing and performance validation of variable generation plants and hybrid multi-technology power systems with variable renewable generation, various energy storage technologies, and conventional energy sources. The researcher should have experience in the broad area of power system dynamic modeling using various software tools (SimPower, DigSilent, PSCAD, etc.) with specific focus on modeling of inverter-based resources for studying their impacts on stability and operation of various power systems (microgrids, islanded systems, grid-connected systems). The researched should also have knowledge of real-time implementation of controls and development of real-time models on target hardware (Opal-RT, RTDS, industrial PLCs, etc.)

Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.


Basic Qualifications

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience .


Additional Required Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes

Ph.D. degree in the field of power systems and renewable energy

  • Experience in modeling of stand-alone and bulk power systems and the impact of inverter-based resources

  • Experience in variable generation plant controls development

  • Experience in reliability services by variable generation

  • Experience in modeling and harmonic analysis in onshore and offshore wind power plants and PV power plants

  • Skilled in development of models and controls for various types of inverter-coupled resources (wind, PV, storage, HVDC, FACTS, etc.)

  • Experience of controller-hardware-in-the-loop and power-hardware-in-the-loop simulations is desirable

  • Knowledge in protection methods and standards

  • Knowledge of grid-code compliance and power quality related issues, measurement and mitigation methods for wind and solar PV power plants

  • Knowledge in electricity market operation and optimization

  • Publication track record demonstrating ability to conduct high-quality research

  • Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Work independently to investigate and/or conduct, test, and document research and experiments

  • Provide reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations

  • Publish results in technical journals and conference proceedings

  • Present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings

  • Work with management and senior staff to develop funding in the power electronics and power systems research areas
