The position will support the development of advanced material and structural validation methods for wind and marine energy systems. Validation of full-scale wind turbine blades is increasingly complex and expensive considering the increasing size of blades and need to simulate the extreme environmental conditions experienced during field operation. Realizing a transition to component-based validation methods for wind turbine blades requires the implementation of advanced composite material and structural models. Development of marine energy systems is in a nascent state. Development of validation methods that support the growth of marine energy systems must evolve alongside emerging marine technologies. Development of validation methods that comprehensively and cost effectively validate both the unique demands of composite materials for marine applications and the complex system architecture of marine energy systems requires the development of an integrated design, analyze, and validate approach. The successful candidate will perform research studies on the development of materials and structural validation methods for composites operating in extreme environments and validation methods for large-scale composite structures. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting laboratory research experiments at NREL’s NWTC. The body of work will inform, guide, and enable robust validation capabilities for both wind and marine energy systems.
Job activities will include:
Development of analytical and FEA models of wind and marine composite structures
Assessment of composite materials for extreme operating environments
Development and simulation of dynamic models for marine and wind structural validation methods
Development of subcomponent validation methods
Development of environmental validation methods
Scaling model studies
Hands-on design and performance of laboratory research validation
Data reduction and analysis
Creation of technical reports, conference publications, and journal articles
Additional Preferred Knowledge and Skills
Experience with technical software including MATLAB, Ansys, and IGOR.
Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
