POSITION OVERVIEW: The Smartwool Senior Apparel Knit Designer brings the Smartwool (SWL) apparel design vision to life through the product creation process with a specific focus on 2D and 3D knit apparel design. This person will be a key partner with the Design Director, Senior Apparel designer and merchandising team. Under the direction of the Design Director, this role will drive SWL’s knit apparel design.

The main responsibilities include designing product that brings the brand to life, that is aligned with the brand guidelines, seasonal design themes, and product line direction. The goal is to create product that exceeds consumer’s expectations, is innovative and commercially compelling, and achieves both brand and quantitative goals. Creation of the presentation tools needed to drive the design vision through the GTM process. Responsible for in season and advanced product innovation requiring project planning, time management and communication skills.

  1. Design: Utilize the SWL Brand Manual, Signature SWL work, and seasonal briefs to design all knit, and cut & sew apparel. Great design work brings the brand to life through product, exceeds consumer expectations and meets business targets (sales/margin).
  • Collaborates in the seasonal kickoff design process with the creation of trend, textile, color stories at the direction of the Design Director.

  • Work with other designers and the merchandising team to facilitate design connectivity between product categories with color/pattern work

  • Work with design/PLM team to color, merchandise and finalize the line utilizing seasonal color stories, flow plans, pattern connectivity across categories ensuring business drivers and brand objectives

  • On time and accurate handoff of design tech packs and all communication with design contractors as per the seasonal product calendar

  1. Manage updates in the visual line plan tool as designs are completed

  2. Manage and create timely hand offs and updates of apparel designs in the PLM tool, that address consumer needs and target prices as specified in the line plan/briefs, and that meet the deadlines identified in the seasonal design calendar. Manage work through contractors to hit calendar deadlines as needed

  3. Represent the design vision and goals at proto reviews and fit sessions. Value engineer product as needed to achieve margin goals. Maintain and contribute a consistent design vision and fit intent through development process.


  • Bachelor Degree in design, textile, or related apparel field preferred

  • 4+ years direct or indirect management experience of small teams or contractors

  • 5+ years’ textile/knit design experience

  • 5+ years’ experience with soft goods in all areas of the development process including merchandising, design, sourcing, and product development

  • High level of proficiency in Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office applications

  • Working knowledge of PLM systems

  • Effective written, visual, and oral communications

  • High level of experience with jacquard pattern and hand knits

  • High level of experience and knowledge of graphing knit patterns in CAD program

  • Experience with 3D systems such as Shima a plus

  • Experience in Ned Graphics CAD software

  • Ability to travel
