In this exciting role as a Senior Systems Engineer you will have responsibility to lead, direct and organize the planning, and execution of high-tech, released product development project teams from concept to commercialization in the medical device arena. You will be reporting to the RD Systems Manager of Nellcor, INVOS and Temperature. Your main focus will be on Released Product Engineering type projects where you will be accountable for overall project requirements and alignment with clinical need, use cases and business expectation.


The Minimally Invasive Therapies Group strives to enable earlier diagnosis, better treatment, faster complication-free recovery, and enhanced patient outcomes through less invasive surgical solutions.

PATIENT MONITORING ANDRECOVERY focuses on improving outcomes associated with respiratory compromise, deep vein thrombosis, nutritional insufficiency, and healthcare associated infections.

A Day in the Life of a Senior SystemsEngineer

  • Partner and work with RPE Project Managers for INVOS, Nellcor andWarmTouch product lines

  • Represent the Systems Engineering group in RPE stewardshipmeetings

  • Work with functional team members including Marketing, ClinicalAffairs and Human Factors to fully understand the clinical need, problem beingaddressed and business goal.

  • Support external vendor testing by acting as a point of contact

  • Identify potential risks (project or technical) during earlyphases of the projects and communicate to team

  • Your expert knowledge of design controls and the product willdrive robust design requirements and traceability

  • Partner with the Verification and Validation team to define thehigh-level VV strategy.

  • Capable of working independently and may provide direction toother engineers working on the project.

  • Provide insight of RPE projects to the rest of the Systems team

  • Interact with senior Medtronic and external personnel onsignificant technical matters often requiring coordination betweenorganizations.

  • Organize and Lead key design tradeoffs, present to upper levelmanagement, and drive decisions.

  • Demonstrate an extensive ability to foresee problems and providealternate solutions.

  • Apply advanced knowledge of biomedical/ system engineeringprinciples, system engineering competencies, and system engineeringmethodologies

  • Incorporate reliability principles and processes to demonstraterobustness during the design process.

  • Develop and maintain clinical relationships with thought leadersin the field.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience

  • Effectively lead teams comprised of individuals with diversebackgrounds; including but not limited to instrument and disposable RD,Software, Hardware, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Clinical andMarketing. Project management experience with international teams and externalengineering service providers.

  • Excellent communication skills, verbal, written and non-verbal;expert active listening skills with a keen awareness for various messagingstyles; and polished ability to tailor delivery to a broad range of audiences

  • Exceptional influencing and interpersonal skills, negotiating;managing change; goal setting; planning and organizing teamwork; ability toaddress difficult situations; conflict resolution; resource constraint andproblem solving. Strong written communication skills.

  • Technically savvy; must be able to discuss, understand and makedecisions regarding a wide array of engineering disciplines and complextechnical/logistical issues.

  • Being able to articulate and understanding, defining, anddesigning to use cases to help define the problem statement is a critical asset

  • Experience in physiology and disease states to understand theclinical problem that is being solved and having the ability to interact withclinicians in their environment and understanding the clinical environment

  • Experience managing complex medical technology developmentprograms. Exposure to systems engineering, concept engineering, hardware andsoftware development, validation and systems integration.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering and/or scientific discipline
