Sunrun Design Tools Manager in Denver, Colorado

Overview:

Sunrun is the largest dedicated residential solar company in the United States working with our partners to create a planet run by the sun. As the Manager of Design Tools on the Design Quality team, you will be responsible for leading a staff of skilled, seasoned systems developers and process owners, who build and maintain the critical technical tools that designers rely on to create full, detailed plan sets with accurate project information for install. This role is expected to be a key advisor to leaders in the organization, championing the use of automation and user-friendly interfaces to enable designers to focus on their core competency of making good design decisions, and supporting the Design Quality team in the planning and delivery of transformation initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of design tool owners supporting the Design & Engineering organization. Provide guidance, direction, and prioritization for design tool development and maintenance.

  • Provide a vision for the team and facilitate the development of team members and technical development capabilities within the organization.

  • Coordinate the efforts of the team of tool owners to drive the following key initiatives:

  • Increase automation of AHJ-specific requirements, facilitate more industry standardization

  • Move from AutoCAD to an alternative, perpetual licensed drafting program. Rework the planset templates to make them less content-heavy and more versatile for design, easier to customize for construction and permitting

  • Simplify structural inputs to better enable outsourcing and overall efficiency

  • Capitalize on SolarApp/Online permitting, prepare for CDP to online permit application

  • Zone in on customer needs, incl. usage/consumption behavior, backup needs

  • Accommodate new functionalities seamlessly: retrofit, EV charge, 2nd systems

  • Champion automated calculations and streamlined error proofing, where appropriate to enable designers and professional engineers to focus on their core competencies of electrical and structural evaluation and decision making.

  • Ensure that the various tool owners develop their improvements in sync with each other, taking advantage of opportunities for linking and automation.

  • Collaborate with Technical Development, Products & Pricing, and other business units to develop capabilities and shared design tool development for the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Engineering or other quantitative discipline.

  • 4+ years experience in a technical role, preferably in solar design or design-related

  • Familiarity with software development programming fundamentals and user acceptance testing

  • High level of comfort with all of the key design tool functions and the basics of the related logic, including Inkslinger and/or EDT, structural calculations, Bill of Materials, residential load calculations, plan sets, line diagrams, construction documents

  • Significant experience drafting in AutoCAD

  • Demonstrated understanding of change management principles

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to properly translate and articulate technology

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate with executive leadership

  • Strong quantitative and business analysis skills

  • Proven ability to work effectively with both local and remote teams

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience managing a team preferred.

  • Autonomy to work independently as well as lead and participate in cross functional teams.

  • Comfort with written and verbal communication of quantitative and qualitative information with executives. Ability to motivate and influence stakeholders to drive complex issues to resolution.

  • Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment with several stakeholders that deliver results.
