Willbros Group, Inc. Performance Engineer in Denver, Colorado

The Performance Engineer will be responsible for energy modeling and performance evaluation of PV plants at the proposal phase, engineering iterations and construction phase for individual projects. This individual will be responsible for solar PV & BESS system size optimization based on energy generation requirements from the client. This person will be responsible for working closely with 3rd party engineering firms during the testing phase of each PV power plant to confirm Capacity output to meet contract requirements. This person will work closely with the construction and commissioning teams for necessary PV plant diagnostics related to performance and functionality of the power plant during the construction, commissioning and warranty phase of each project. This individual will support the internal Electrical Engineering team as requested or directed by the Engineering Manager.

  • Develop the PVsyst energy generation models for project proposals as well as awarded & Constructed projects for Monofacial, Bi-Facial, thin-film or any other emerging solar PV module technologies

  • Lead the solar PV Plant Guaranteed Capacity Testing exhibit development, modification or redlines, testing procedure development. Lead technical negotiations with Client and provide additional support as required

  • PV System Performance Evaluation for new project proposals and completed project Capacity Testing requirements including diagnostics if required

  • Evaluate utility-scale PV systems modeled/measured performance ratios using PVSyst, linear regression models such as ASTM E2848, IEC and other mathematical data analytics

  • Develop the project shading studies; provide shading analysis and guide internal engineering design team for optimized location of solar PV array on site and or recommended clearing of vegetation

  • Calculate actual system loss (voltage drop, electrical effect, DC/AC wiring loss, transformer loss, ancillary services loss) and system availability from data collected by SCADA or on-site testing as needed

  • Contribute to ongoing research efforts to improve modeling of PV systems throughout their lifetime

  • Observe, record and calculate contractual Utility PV Performance Testing & Commissioning obligations and provide Performance Testing support to Operations and Site Construction team

  • Review Utility interconnection documents like Facility studies, interconnection agreements or Power Purchase Agreements for energy performance

  • Apply expertise about potential PV system component failure, potential modeling issues, and site design to troubleshoot current PV systems operating below expected levels of Guaranteed Capacity & production

  • Prepare test reports and give technical presentations on the testing results to Owner, as required

  • Provide review of field-testing data such as PV array infrared imaging and open-circuit voltage testing to identify performance issues or component failure

  • Identify any fault patterns based on the electrical characteristics (I-V Curve, open-circuit voltage, hotspot, potential short circuit) and validate defect evidence in potential warranty claims

  • Participate on calls with customers answering questions on PV system performance and recommending possible next steps for performance investigation

  • Develop and maintain equipment database (. PAN and .OND files) for different equipment involved in solar PV design and update the same periodically for PVsyst and other Software Modeling purposes

  • Design data visuals and written reports for audiences ranging from technical to management personnel

  • Work with data analyst to develop and implement more intelligent data cleaning and analyses tools to streamline performance model processes

  • Use of company suggested means and methods for effective & fast communication with internal and external teams

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Engineering Manager

  • At least two years of experience in energy modeling preferred

  • Must be proficient in PVsyst and Microsoft Office and demonstrated ability to model expected system output for utility-scale PV projects through Pvsyst or similar software highly preferred

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or any other related engineering stream.

  • 3 years min. work experience in Solar PV Design or construction industry

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and specifications

  • Expertise with modeling of modules, racking, inverters and associated equipment for a proper energy modeling of utility scale solar PV projects

  • Ability to understand manufacturer’s modeling parameters, application limitations and commissioning guidelines

  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and follow through on assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision

  • Able to work in a fast-moving environment while maintaining a positive attitude in stressful situations

  • Ability to interact with various outside parties professionally via email, text, telephone and/or in person

  • Strong organizational skills necessary to document and track issues from inception to resolution

  • Outstanding problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze situations and recommend solutions

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Salary/wage is Dependent on Experience
