Dewberry is currently seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join our Denver, Colorado office. This is an excellent career opportunity for an enthusiastic and talented individual to work with outstanding professionals.

Our Denver-based team has served local water systems in Colorado and around the country for over 25 years while Dewberry has provided professional services for heavy civil engineering projects for more than 65 years, since the company’s inception in 1956. We are respected by our clients as an organization with strong technical expertise and solid project delivery and performance. Dewberry is working to transform the industry through some of the most complex water and wastewater projects in the region and the country.

The focus of the work types will require a candidate with a technical background in water/wastewater treatment infrastructure design to join our established practice group in Denver, Colorado. They will also support projects in other offices throughout Dewberry’s Water Service Line. This position will be responsible for leading projects through planning, assessment, design and construction phases and interfacing with municipal clients on water and wastewater rehabilitation, upgrade, expansion, and new infrastructure projects while providing task and project management support to senior level managers.

Individuals will perform complex analysis on all design phases, structural modeling, structural calculations, plan production, and technical specification writing. Typical structures to be design as are involved in our work are concrete vaults and wet-wells, tanks (aeration basins, clarifiers, filters, etc.), flumes/channels, pump stations (wet- and dry-wells), etc. Regular building types to support projects often include concrete and masonry structures and pre-engineered metal buildings. A large portion of our practice is large-diameter pipelines (distribution mains, raw water collection, sewers, sewage force mains, etc.) where structural elements are required such as pipe supports and thrust restraint systems. Aging infrastructure rehabilitation is also a significant portion of our work which requires structural condition assessment and recommendations on rehabilitation methods for problems such as spalling concrete, corrosion repairs, settlement, etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead design efforts on a range of water/wastewater infrastructure projects, including preparation of planning studies, field conditions assessments, preliminary design, final design, and office and field services during construction, related to various structures employed.

  • Assist project managers on large, complex projects, including task management.

  • Bring creativity in predesign and design for value added solutions.

  • Maintain communication and strong relationship with regulatory agencies to support project permitting.

  • Communicate and work directly with clients.

  • Assist project managers in scoping and proposing on potential projects and selling new work.

  • Develop level of effort fee estimates for structural task components to support project managers from a discipline perspective.

  • Provide a high-level of customer service to external and internal clients in support of our projects. This is exhibited through effective and open communication, timeliness in delivery of tasks, anticipation of critical issues and development of appropriate solutions, collaborative team member, etc.

Requirements:

  • A 4-year degree from an ABET accredited institute in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering.

  • 10+ years of experience in municipal water and wastewater infrastructure engineering.

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License or Structural Engineering (SE) License in Civil Engineering in the State of Colorado (or ability to obtain, when hired).

  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or REVIT is highly desirable.

  • Occasionally work will require unusual hours.

  • Projects locations vary and, at times, will require out of town travel.

Skills/Competencies:

  • Proven ability to perform in a lead project engineer capacity, excellent written and oral communications skills, and a thorough knowledge of industry practices and regulations are required. Must also possess a thorough knowledge of current technology and be able to select and apply appropriate engineering software for use on project.

  • Experience with RISA-3D, RAM, RAM Elements, STAAD, ENERCALC, Tekla-Tedds, Mathcad, SAP2000, SAFE, ETABS and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of structural design standards, building codes, and applicable technical references including structural provisions in the International Building Code, the OSHA regulations, and ACI 350. Knowledge and experience in practicing in high seismic zones where those applicable codes are more rigorous is highly desirable as Dewberry is aggressively wanting to grow our California and west coast practice.

  • Strong knowledge of fundamental engineering principles and building component assemblies.

  • Skilled in planning studies, conducting field condition assessments, coordinating with utility owners, preparing preliminary and final design, coordinating drawing preparation, developing technical specifications, and performing engineering support services during construction.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as an engaged and collaborative team environment.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English, both written and oral.

Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and ability to pass a driving record background check.
