SALARY RANGE: $87,650 - $121,820

Base salary is determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.

LOCATION: This position may be located in Fountain, CO, Denver, CO or Cheyenne, WY.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for the engineering and design of Black Hills Energy transmission and distribution pipeline systems serving over 1,000,000 customers in compliance with pipeline safety regulations, industry standards and general engineering practices. Responsible for strategic growth planning of the natural gas infrastructure, facility designs to include town border stations, pressure regulating and over-pressure protection systems, odorization systems, large volume metering facilities and other facilities necessary to transport gas from our suppliers to our customers. Provides project management for large scale construction projects including project design, material specifications, permitting, right-of-way, pressure testing and placing facilities into service.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Director, Engineering Design and Project Management

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Accountable for network modeling and analysis for Black Hills’ distribution and transmission systems. Imparts engineering skill and judgment to construct and calibrate accurate flow models that serve as the foundation for system expansions, relocation and rehabilitation projects and optimize capital spending selections.

  • Accountable for facility designs to include town border stations, pressure regulating and over-pressure protection systems, odorization systems, large volume metering facilities and other facilities necessary to transport gas from our suppliers to our customers.

  • Accountable for monitoring system performance to ensure system capacity integrity is maintained and customer service is not jeopardized. Prepares alternatives and estimates for recommended actions necessary to return system performance within acceptable standards.

  • Accountable for strategic growth planning of BHE distribution systems to all for deliberate and methodical capital planning and spending. Studies population and industrial growth projections to plan infrastructure expansions commensurate with the economy of our distribution territories.

  • Designs pipeline relocation or rehabilitation projects to achieve the most cost effective solution to mandatory relocations due to city, county or state road projects. Includes development of system outage procedures to ensure the safe shut down, purge, tie-in and re-establishment of service to segments of the company’s pipeline systems.

  • Plans and designs system uprating projects that increase system capacity and performance and comply with pipeline safety regulations.

  • Provides project management for large scale construction projects including project design, material specifications, permitting, right-of-way, pressure testing and placing facilities into service.

  • Provides support to the BHE sales and marketing personnel in sizing and estimating the cost of facilities to service new or expanding customers.

  • Provides day to day technical support and problem solving to operations personnel, advises on standards, procedures, pipeline safety regulations and provides research on a wide variety of technical topics.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides professional services elsewhere in the company’ energy business as requested.

  • Participates in community relations-based activities where opportunities and interest exists.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Requires effective working relationships with BHE operations management of all levels.

  • Vice presidents, general managers, and supervisors.

  • Maintains relationships with vendors, suppliers and industry associations.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 5-7 years of utility industry experience.

  • Supervisory experience.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree from ABET Engineering College.

  • MBA preferred.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Demonstrate technical, financial and operations expertise.

  • Demonstrate strategic and operational planning.

  • Good understanding of network design, standards, drafting and general system operations.

  • Understanding of financial and technical decisions models and cost/benefit approach to decision -making.

  • Understanding of network analysis, drafting and mapping software.

  • Proficient in word processing, database and spreadsheet programs.

CERTIFICATIONS/CREDENTIALS:

  • Registered Professional Engineer certification preferred.
