A postdoctoral position is available in NREL’s Chemistry and Nanoscience Center to characterize, understand, and rationally design electrode structures, focused on improving electrode performance and durability and validating electrode production pathways. The candidate will be responsible for the fabrication of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), experimental design, in-situ electrochemical testing, and the subsequent interpretation of the electrochemical performance. The candidate should be familiar with electrocatalysis and electrochemistry, and comfortable working in a dynamic collaborative atmosphere.

We will potentially hire multiple candidates for this role.

An acceptable candidate should understand electrochemical processes and diagnostics of electrochemical (electrolyzer/fuel cell) devices, such as but not limited to:

  • AC impedance diagnostics relevant to membrane and ion transport

  • Surface area measurements such as hydrogen underpotential deposition and electrochemical carbon monoxide stripping

  • Diffusion limiting current measurements relevant to gas transport both in the bulk electrode and near the electrocatalyst surface

  • Kinetic measurements of electrode performance and knowledge of electrochemical kinetic modeling

  • Synergistic effects relating to electrolyte/electrocatalyst interfaces
