Annual Salary Range: $39,600 - $63,500
Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Our Power Systems Engineering Center develops methods for real-time operations and controls of power systems at various scales to support a more reliable and efficient electric grid.
NREL’s intern program provides a diverse opportunity for students and recent graduates. In addition to mentorship and real, hands-on experience, students and recent graduates will participate in professional development activities that will help strengthen their technical and professional skills.
The successful candidate will be working on resiliency and reliability challenges for evolving distribution systems with high levels of inverter-based generation. Their objective will be to develop and validate the models for transient and steady state analysis of distribution power systems, where microgrids can be managed to operate in grid-connected and standalone or networked microgrids.
The applicants should bring a strong track record in modeling and simulation of electrical power distribution systems and grid control. Ideal candidates will have experience with dynamic and steady state power system modeling, microgrid modeling and operation, and proficiency in Python and Julia.
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications
Power system modeling using one or more of the following: OpenDss, RSCAD, Cyme, Synergee, Milsoft, and/or Simulink;
Real-time modeling and simulation using RTDS or Opal-RT (RTDS preferred);
Using OpenDSS and Python together (e.g., OpenDSSdirect) for time-series and steady state analysis;
Power system modeling efforts including multiple modes of operation for microgrids;
Co-simulation of multi-time scale power system models;
Proficiency with Python, Matlab, Julia.
