Maxar is seeking a Principal Dynamics and Controls Engineer to join our team in Palo Alto, CA. The Dynamics and Controls Analysis (DCA) team members are responsible for analyzing satellite dynamics and creating the control algorithms that will become part of the flight software code. Dynamics analysis can encompass rigid body, flexible body, and multi body dynamics as appropriate to support the mission needs. The control algorithm development requires an in-depth understanding of sensor design and actuator characteristics in order to create models of each element to optimize performance, evaluate stability, and create simulations that demonstrate compliance to customer requirements.
DCA team members work as part of larger multi-disciplinary teams that include satellite system engineers, structural engineers, flight software developers, sensor and actuator manufactures, and customers. Program activities begin at contract award with evaluation of requirements and continue through satellite launch and orbit raising to the final mission orbital location. Additional support is provided after satellite handover to customers as needed for troubleshooting or off nominal operations. Thus, DCA team member’s involvement encompasses the entire life cycle of a satellite.
Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related field.
Requires 10 years of relevant working experience
Specialization in Controls required.
Courses/experience in Feedback Control Systems, Digital Control Systems, Dynamics, System ID, Signal processing and/or Non-linear Control Systems, Kalman Filter design is required
Demonstrated capabilities to lead, provide technical direction and collaborate with Controls analysts team from design conception through flight implementation/operations
Experienced with control systems requirements analysis to solve critical dynamics and controls issues related to jitter, LOS, slewing and pointing
Expert with extensive practical and theoretical experience in modeling, simulation, system identification and sensitivity analysis of critical parameters (plant, sensors and actuators) that impact performance
Expert in mathematical development and evaluation/analysis of algorithms for precision pointing, guidance and tracking
Bring extensive end-to-end experience to planning, developing, validating/verifying high fidelity simulation tools in Matlab/Simulink platform
Experienced with attitude controls operations - orbit raising, in-orbit testing, on-orbit operations or anomaly recoveries
Master's degree or PhD is preferred
Experience with Matlab, Simulink, C programming and simulation tools, with Autocoding experience a plus.
Demonstrated expertise in state estimation and feedback control synthesis, experience with Kalman Filter design preferred
