The Specialized Warfighter Development Contract (SWDC) Threat Modeling Center (TMC) team at Northrop Grumman Space Systems (NGSS) is looking for you to join our team as an IR Signature Modeling Engineer (Principal Engineer Systems) based out of Schriever AFB, in Colorado Springs, CO.

The Threat Modeling Center (TMC) is responsible for development of models and simulations (M&S) used to stimulate element models of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS), including kinematic missile modeling, IR signature modeling, data production/analysis activities, and maintenance/sustainment activities for the entire TMC software baseline.

The TMC is a cornerstone element of SWDC, as part of the MDA Engineering Directorate (DE) Task Order.

The TMC is responsible for the development and delivery of high fidelity threat modeling products in support of the MDA's BMDS.

What You'll get to Do:

This position requires a detail-oriented engineer that will be responsible for the creation of high level of detail infrared radiation (IR) signature models for use in MDA Ground Test events, wargames, and exercises designed to stimulate hardware in the loop (HWIL) testing of Overhead Persistent Infrared Radiation (OPIR) sensors and algorithms.

The IR signature modeling includes both the boost phase portion of a missile's flight (referred to as plume modeling), as well as associative post-boost heating and optical reflectivity for missile objects in flight (known as hardbody modeling).

This position is also responsible for developing high fidelity IR signature data packages for use in HWIL testing.

Must have a good understanding of modeling and simulation methods and processes.

Must be able to apply standard engineering and mathematical algorithms to ensure the accurate portrayal of expected phenomenology characteristics during a missile's flight, particularly heating related to boost phase and post-boost flight.

This position must be able to work with little or no direct supervision, works as an integral member of a simulation product delivery team, and meet time critical delivery schedules.

This position also works closely with the TMC's System Engineering and Software Development groups, as most of the tools used by the group are developed in-house.

This position also communicates with various internal and external customers and ITP users in regards to requirements clarification/de-confliction, trouble-shooting products and data, and general threat simulation subject matter expertise.

Qualifications:

You'll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Aeronautics, Physics, or Math with a minimum of 5 years of experience or Master's Degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience

  • Strong knowledge of the flight characteristics, motion, and performance of ballistic missiles is preferred

  • Understanding of thermodynamic heating properties as they relate to kinematic trajectories of ballistic missile systems

  • Excellent time management, schedule estimation, and delegation skills

  • Excellent demonstrated oral and written communication skills

  • Attention to detail is necessary

  • Must be results focused, work well within a dynamic environment, be self-motivated, able to work in a team environment, and be able to produce reliable products and documentation within established deadlines

  • Must already possess an active DoD Secret clearance with current SSBI; preferred DoD Top Secret clearance

These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:

  • Previous experience modeling infrared signature characteristics of ballistic missile systems

  • Modeling, Simulation, and automation experience a plus

  • Strong math, physics or engineering background is preferred

  • Experience with scripting languages, such as Python, Bash, or Matlab; and ability to analyze and correlate large data sets is also preferred

  • Preferred to already possess an active DoD Top Secret clearance with current SSBI
